5 Ways to Stay Cool When Your A/C Goes Out

It’s hard enough to stay cool in Middle Tennessee with a functioning air conditioning system. When your a/c system goes out, staying cool seems like nothing but a pipe dream.

There are some ways to ease the pain of a broken a/c unit while you wait for a technician to arrive and fix your system, however.

In the event of a system failure, contact A&A HVAC Repair immediately to get your system up and running in no time.

Close the Windows / Doors

If you system stops working, you want to make sure all windows and doors are tightly shut. You want to trap whatever remaining cool air is inside your house for as long as possible, and an open door or window can see that all that precious cool air is gone in an instant.

Be sure to close your blinds as well; sunlight is the enemy!

Use Fans

Fans can be lifesavers in these situations. While they don’t actually lower the temperature, they still create a breeze and cool you off.

Placing a pan of cool water in front of the fan will reduce the temperature of the air being blown around the room, acting as a mini a/c for as long as the water stays cool.

Eat Cold Food

While there isn’t much you can do about the temperature of the air around you, you can effectively regulate your internal temperature by eating cold or frozen foods. Anything that doesn’t require the use of a stove or oven is great in these situations, as they will only produce more heat to float around your home.

Avoid Caffeine

Avoiding any source of caffeine will help you avoid dehydration. Caffeine is a diuretic that will undoubtedly increase the number of times you visit the bathroom. In a situation where you are having a hard time staying cool, preserving bodily fluids is essential.

Kill the Lights

Overhead lights only increase the heat in a room. Incandescent light bulbs are notorious for running hot and need to be turned off whenever possible if you’re a/c is out. There are better options for light bulbs in these situations, CFLs, that run much cooler and more efficiently.
